Keep Your Hearts Soft
Mat 19:4 And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,'
Mat 19:5 and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH' ?
Mat 19:6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."
Every marriage involves two imperfect people. It not only is personally challenging to work out difficulties within marriage, but it is a spiritual contest since the Adversary is always seeking points of vulnerability to work his destruction inour lives (1 Peter 5:8).
1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Our temptation to self-interest and self-defense in our marriage relationship is a prime target. The Enemy (our acuser) will point out and exaggerate our spouse's shortcomings and will foster anger and unforgiveness growing in our hearts toward one another.
Jesus warns that disintergration attacks the marriage where hardness of heart is allowed to grow (Mark 10:4-5).
Mar 10:4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her."
Mar 10:5 And Jesus answered and said to them, "Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.1618
Also Proverbs 28:14:
Pro 28:14 Happy is the man who is always reverent, But he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.
Let us be warned against giving this place toward our spouse, seeing how Scripture links hardness of heart to unbelief (Mark 16:14)
Mar 16:14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
To pride (Daniel 5:20)
Dan 5:20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.
To stubborness (2 Chronicles 36:13)
2Ch 36:13 And he also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear an oath by God; but he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD God of Israel.
We are exhorted as married believers to relate in a way that builds one another up. We are to encourage one another "lest any of you be hardened" (Hebrews 3:13). And to let our words lift with encouragment (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Heb 10:24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,
Heb 10:25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
With edification (Romans 14:19)
Rom 14:19 Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.
With thankfulness and prayer for one another (Philippians 1:3-4)
Php 1:3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,
Php 1:4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy,
These are the things we do as we watch over, care for, and build up our marriages. I pray that you were blessed as we looked at this study. May you always feel the love of your spouse and the Love of your heavenly Bridegroom. HE is coming soon for His Bride.
Know that you are loved, valued, and appreciated, by God and by me.
